The 3 attributes needed to lose fat and stay lean

I recently interviewed Carter Good on my podcast and we both agreed on the 3 main characteristics that you must develop to lose body fat and stay lean: Discipline, consistency and patience.

 

  1. Discipline: This attribute is obvious but essential for achieving fat loss and improving overall health. My definition of discipline is the ability to resist short term pleasures to achieve long term success. This does not mean you need to be disciplined 24/7, but you do need to make decisions which align with your fat loss goals. For example, being disciplined enough to prepare your meals for the week to reduce the likelihood of you making poor food choices.
  2. Consistency: Most people drastically underestimate the compound effect of consistency. The person who goes to the gym consistently 2-3 times per week to do purposeful weight training sessions, is going to get far superior results than the person who trains 6 days per week leading up to a holiday and then stops training until the next special occasion comes around. Consistency is key.
  3. Patience:  Based on my experience as a Coach, most people really struggle with patience, even after they have developed discipline and consistency. In order to build patience during your fat loss journey, it is important you switch your mindset and focus on the important health markers such as your performance in the gym, how many steps you are doing, how much sleep you are getting etc. This switch in mindset will keep you focused on the most important thing when it comes to losing fat and staying lean – overall health.
